The amazing makeup company M.A.C., also known as Make-Up Art Cosmetics, manufactures cosmetics that were originally endorsed by celebrities, models, and professional makeup artists.

The company has become synonymous with glamor due to its ever-growing presence in the fashion industry, continued use of celebrity endorsements and commitment to cruelty-free products and universal diversity.

Where M.A.C. Came From

MAC was started in Canada by Frank Toskan and Frank Angelo in 1985.  MAC opened their first standalone store in the United States in 1991, in Greenwich Village. The Estée Lauder Companies, who acquired controlling interest in MAC in 1994, finished their acquisition of the company in 1998. One year prior to the acquisition, original founder Frank Angelo died in 1997 due to complications during surgery.

Shortly following the buy-out, Frank Toskan left the company to found another AIDS Charity, with brother-in-law, Vic Casale, an original MAC Chemist. The MAC AIDS Fund has been continued by the new owners. Money for the fund is raised by the sale of Viva Glam products (currently available in six lipstick colors and two glosses) There is also a limited edition gloss that was co-designed by Fergie. 100% of the sale price of Viva Glam products is donated to help men, women and children living with HIV and AIDS. Since its inception in 1994 to the present date, the fund has raised over $135 million US Dollars.

When Purchasing M.A.C. Products

If you are going to make a M.A.C. purchase you need to keep these things in mind:

  • MAC has a special recycling program to encourage customers and clients to bring in their used makeup containers for recycling. This “Back to MAC” program allows customers to bring in 6 containers to any MAC Store or MAC Counter. In exchange, the customer receives one free MAC Lipstick of their choice.
  • MAC Gift cards are redeemable only at actual MAC stores. If you want a gift card that is redeemable at a MAC Counter, you should just get a gift card to the department store where the
    MAC Counter is located.
  • MAC Cosmetics offers the MAC Pro and MAC Pro Student programs to provide support to Makeup Artists and Makeup Artists in training. Certified Makeup Artists are eligible to apply. If selected to become a member, Artists enjoy the benefits of special MAC previews, makeup master classes, product discounts, and special events.
